An interdisciplinary team of scientists takes responsibility for the content of the Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe, establishing itself in 1975 as the editorial board.
- Horst Baier (*1933), sociologist and founding member
- Gangolf Hübinger (*1950), historian, member of the Editorial Board since 2005
- M. Rainer Lepsius (1928–2014), sociologist, founding member and managing editor of the MWG 1975-2014
- Wolfgang J. Mommsen (1930–2004), historian and founding member
- Wolfgang Schluchter (*1938), sociologist and founding member, since 2014 managing editor of the MWG
- Johannes Winckelmann (1900–1985), jurist und founding member
The Editorial Board defined the edition’s rules and design, determined structure and volume classification of the complete edition and chose well-respected scientists for editing the volumes.
